Trillanes pushing NP leader Villar for another presidential run

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is pushing former Senate President Manny Villar to make another run for the presidency, six years after shying away from politics following his defeat in the 2010 elections.

Trillanes said Villar, the avowed leader of the Nacionalista Party, had the competence and integrity to run the country.

"I believe he can steer this country into the right direction. He would be a good consensus builder which is what we need right now," Trillanes said.

Trillanes said Villar also had leadership experience as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Senate President.

Trillanes has earlier announced his own desire to run as vice president in 2016.

He said, however, that his vice presidential bid would depend on the NP.

NP  members went on a cruise in Japan last April to discuss its position on various issues but failed to get a consensus on whether the party would field its own slate in next year's elections.

The NP fielded candidates in a coalition with President Benigno Aquino III's Liberal Party in the 2013 mid-term elections. -NB, GMA News
