Almost 5 million voters still haven’t had their biometrics taken —Comelec chief

Commission on Elections chairman Andres Bautista said almost 5 million Filipino voters have not yet had their biometrics taken, five months left before the deadline to do so.

"As of our latest record, we have 4.7 million who have yet to have their biometrics taken," Bautista said.

The poll chief reiterated that those who have no biometrics data by the deadline of October 31, 2015 will have their names deactivated from the list of voters, in accordance with Republic Act 10367 or the Mandatory Biometrics Registration Act of 2013.

"May we remind our citizens that this elections is different because if you do not have your biometrics taken, you will not be allowed to vote in May 2016," Bautista said.

He then reminded voters to go to their local Comelec office to enlist or have their biometrics data taken.

Voters' biometrics data include a photograph, fingerprint, and signature.

The biometrics data will be captured by a Voter Registration Machine handled by an authorized operator.

Off-site registration and validation centers

Bautista said the Comelec is mulling putting up registration and off-site validation centers in shopping malls.

“We are already talking with mall owners so that we can provide more accessible registration venues,” he said.
