As Duterte says no to VP run in 2016, UNA may link up with Arroyo's Lakas

As Sen. Grace Poe expressed reluctance at being Vice President Jejomar Binay's running mate in 2016, Binay has hinted Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is a good potential vice presidential candidate.

However, Duterte said that he will not be running for a national position in the 2016 elections.

"I would like to relay my message to him that I am not running for any national position," Duterte said in a report on GMA's "24 Oras Weekend" aired Saturday.

Despite the rejection, Binay insists that Duterte would make a good vice president.

"Let me reiterate, I know the guy," Binay said. "Mayor Duterte is qualified."

Vice President Binay was in Negros Oriental on Saturday with former Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, one of the leaders of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, and a known ally of former president and current Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, suggesting an alliance between the two parties.

"We're polarizing towards the UNA [Binay-led United Nationalist Alliance]. Number one, our chairman emeritus, the former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo... We're very grateful to the vice president to be the only, the highest elected official who is sympathetic to her," Suarez said.

"If Bong Revilla is not detained, we will ask him to consider," he said.

When asked if he would consider Senator Bong Revilla as a running mate, Binay replied, "So long as I haven't selected anybody yet, everybody is being considered."

Although the UNA and Lakas-CMD may join forces, the administration Liberal Party does not seem bothered.

"Yung Lakas, mahina ngayon yan. Yun namang UNA, huli na," said LP's Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice. "Hindi threat sa Liberal Party both Lakas and UNA." — Jessica Bartolome/JDS, GMA News
