Ombudsman document betrays plan for my impeachment, VP Binay says

The camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay on Thursday said that the supposed cover letter of an Ombudsman resolution would prove that impeachment charges are being readied against him.

A 24 Oras report said the cover letter was from the complaint-affidavit filed by the Ombudsman's Field Investigation Office in relation to the supposed involvement of the Vice President and his son, suspended Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, on the alleged overpricing of the Makati City Hall Building II.

On Tuesday, Vice President Binay said that based on the complaint-affidavit, he is being investigated "for purposes of determining sufficiency of evidence that would warrant filing of impeachment."

Binay argued that he cannot be impeached over corrupt acts allegedly committed during his term as mayor of Makati City.

The report said Binay again criticized the Aquino administration for implementing "selective justice" or the its alleged prosecution of political rivals while sparing its allies.

A spokesperson for President Benigno Aquino III defended the Ombudsman's actions, citing the evidence presented before the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee, which investigated the allegations of corruption against Binay.

"Ang patakaran ng Aquino administration ay kinakailangang ebidensiya ang maging batayan ng pagsasampa ng ano mang usapin," said Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr.

"Walang partisipasyon ang tanggapan ng pangulo at sangay ng ehekutibo sa paghain noon," he said. -Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/NB, GMA News
