Lock named new Supreme Court administrator


The Supreme Court (SC) announced Tuesday the appointment of Christopher Lock,deputy court administrator of the high tribunal, as its new court administrator, GMA 7’s DZBB reported. Lock, a career official at the high court, was chosen from a field of five nominees during a special en banc session in Baguio City on Tuesday. Lock replaces Presbitero Velasco Jr, who was appointed to the SC on March 31. The justices chose from a list of five applicants, which included three deputy court administrators and justices from the Court of Appeals (CA) and the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA). The candidates included CTA Justice Lovell Bautista, Deputy Court Administrator Zenaida Elepaño, Deputy Court Administrator Jose Perez and CA Justice Noel Tijam. The Office of the Court Administrator was created by Presidential Decree 828 to assist the Supreme Court in the exercise of its power of administrative supervision over all lower courts. In the discharge of its administrative functions, the SC acts through the court administrator and the deputy court administrators. Lock has been quoted as saying upon the appointment of Velasco to the SC: "There will definitely be big shoes to fill for the next court administrator. We were witnesses to the legacy left by Justice Velasco." Lock, 63 years old, is a native of Cebu City. He earned his Bachelor of Law degree at the Far Eastern University Institute of Law. He started his government career in 1980 as an agent of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and then moved on to become an assistant prosecutor at the Manila City Hall. He was appointed presiding judge of the Cavite City regional trial court in 1994 and was named deputy court administrator in 2001.-GMANews.TV
