CBCP head: Moral conversion sole weapon vs. corruption

The president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines on Thursday said that moral conversion has now become the only antidote to the culture of corruption in the Philippines

In an interview over Church-run radio Veritas, Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said he believes that at this time, no policy or law could tear down the culture of corruption in the country.

“The problem of corruption has become cultural, it has become part of our cultural norms [and] behavior so it will certainly take more than just policies, it calls for a change in paradigm, moral conversion, it cannot be just a change of laws," he said.

Moreover, he said "the problem of corruption is really systemic ... so we have to be very serious about this.”

Likewise, he expressed alarm over the fact that some of the country's prominent leaders, individuals, and groups have been linked to corrupt practices.

Villegas admitted that the problem of corruption is already deeply engraved in our culture, and that only moral conversion can serve as an antidote. — LBG GMA News
