GMA Network’s first weatherman Amado Pineda passes on at 77

GMA Network's first weatherman Amado Pineda has died of cardiac arrest at Saint Camillus Polyclinic in Pasig City at around 1 p.m. on Thursday.

He was 77.

Pineda's daughter Tintin confirmed the news to GMA News Online.

"Ang lakas-lakas pa niya for the past month," she said in a phone interview.

Tintin added that her father had been energetic in the last few weeks, often seen tinkering with their home's electric circuits and plumbing. He also had the strength to go to the supermarket and eat out.

This had been a welcome development, as Pineda had not been in good health for a while, Tintin said.

The weatherman underwent surgery last March. Prior to that, he was bedridden starting early 2014 until he finished therapy.

Pineda was the Philippines' first widely recognized television weatherman.

A meteorologist with the PAGASA, Pineda became a familiar face and a household name doing weather forecasts for the evening newscast of GMA Network from the 1970s to the 1980s. — BM, GMA News
