AFTER DISCUSSIONS WITH GOVT

Iglesia ni Cristo ends EDSA takeover

(UPDATED 11:38 a.m.) Iglesia ni Cristo ended its protest that took over EDSA after a discussion between church leaders and government officials.

"Nagkausap na po ang panig ng Iglesia ni Cristo at panig ng pamahalaan at sa pag-uusap na ito ay nagkapaliwanagan na po ang magkabilang panig," said Iglesia ni Cristo general evangelist Ka Bienvenido Santiago in a recorded message aired over Radio DZBB.

"Kaya payapa na po ang lahat. Itong isinasagawa nating mapayapang pagtitipion ay natatapos na po nang mapayapa rin ngayon pong Lunes ng umaga."

The protesters began leaving EDSA Shaw by 8:34 a.m., Manny Vargas of Radio DZBB reported.

Church members began their mass action last Thursday at the Department of Justice compound to protest what they say was a special treatment in a complaint filed by an expelled minister who has accused church leaders of illegally detention and harassment.

They moved their protest to EDSA on Friday, paralyzing the main thoroughfare with some 20,000 people attending the rally on Sunday night.

Those currently occupying EDSA will leave the highway by 11 a.m., Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos said on Monday morning.

In a text message to Glenn Juego of Radio DZBB, Abalos said he had already been in touch with church leadership confirming the move.

The Mandaluyong city government issued a permit for the group to stay at EDSA-Shaw until midnight, but Abalos announced during the program that he was allowing protesters to stay until the morning.

Mass actions

Earlier reports indicated that the mass action would continue in Manila, where the group had a permit to rally until Sept. 4. Several Iglesia ni Cristo members, in fact, began massing up at the DOJ compound in Padre Faura.

But DZBB reports indicated that church members there have also begun going home.

Meanwhile, members of Iglesia ni Cristo gathered in front of the regional offices of the Department of Justice have also dispersed.

Junfred Calamba of RGMA Palawan reported that those gathered in front of the Puerto Princesa City Hall of Justice started leaving around 9:20 a.m.

Iglesia ni Cristo members assembled in front of the Davao City Hall of Justice have also left.

An earlier radio dzBB report said at least 50,000 members of the religious sect joined the protest action in Davao City and 20,000 more in Iloilo City.

Late Cabinet meeting

The Iglesia ni Cristo move came after President Benigno Aquino III convened a meeting with his Cabinet members late Sunday night at his residence at Bahay Pangarap.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Manuel Quezon III posted several pictures of the meeting.

Seen in the posted pictures were Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Social Welfare Sec. Dinky Soliman, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Ronald Llamas, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, and Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, among others.

Roxas later confirmed that the group met to discuss the Iglesia ni Cristo rally. - JST/ALG, GMA News
