Palace vows no public funds will be used in Mar Roxas campaign

(Updated 10:42 p.m.) Not a single centavo from public funds will be used to campaign for administration candidate Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, Malacañang assured Thursday, following President Benigno Aquino III’s commitment to exert all his efforts to push Roxas’ presidential candidacy.

“Hindi po gumagawa ang pamahalaan nang labag sa batas at nananatiling tapat sa aming mga boss, ang mga mamamayang Pilipino,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. said in a media briefing.

“Bawat sentimo, bawat piso ng pondo ng bayan ay ginagastos sa tamang paraan, at hindi po lumalabag sa batas,” Coloma stressed.

During the ruling Liberal Party’s (LP) convention on Wednesday, Aquino vowed to give his all for the 2016 run of Roxas, his anointed successor.

“Palagay ko 'yung darating na kampanya ang magiging pinakamahirap na kampanya para sa akin dahil ibubuhos ko na lahat ng maibubuhos ko tungo sa kampanyang ito,” said Aquino, who sits as chairman of the LP.

The camp of opposition standard-bearer Vice President Jejomar Binay has said "heavy advertising" contributed to Roxas' big leap in a recent SWS survey.

Lawyer Rico Quicho, Binay's spokesperson for political affairs, added that "questionable use of government resources especially on the part of Secretary Roxas, contributed to the bump in his numbers to tie the Vice President, if the margin of error is considered."

Roxas, who was Aquino’s running mate in the 2010 national elections, lost to then Makati Mayor Binay. Roxas and Binay are set to face anew in the political arena come 2016 for the presidency.

Coloma cited how Aquino’s role in the 2013 midterm elections contributed to the successful senatorial bids of nine of the administration’s candidates.

“Nakita po naman natin ang resulta nito, na ang kanyang mga ikinampanya ay karamihan sa kanila doon sa senatorial slate ay nanalo by a ratio of nine to three, at sa lahat naman po ng pagkakataong ‘yan napanatili pa rin naman niya ‘yung mataas na pagsang-ayon ng mga mamamayan sa kanyang performance,” said Coloma. —NB, GMA News
