Playgirls campaigned for Tolentino's brother in 2013 polls

(Updated 4:37 p.m.) Girl group Playgirls, who performed after a Liberal Party event on Thursday, campaigned for the brother of MMDA chairman and senatorial aspirant Francis Tolentino, according to the group's Facebook account.

Tolentino on Thursday afternoon denied bringing the girl group to a birthday party for Liberal party member Laguna Rep. Benjamin Agarao. He said that the emcee who told the crowd that the girl group's performance was a "gift" from the MMDA chairman "probably got misinformed".

But, according to the group's Facebook page, the girls performed for Cavite Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino in April 2013.

One post even indicated that the group was invited by the MMDA chairman.

Sought for comment, Playgirls manager Michale Tupaz told GMA News Online that the group was invited through a booking agent.

"Personally, I don't know him [Francis Tolentino]," he said.

The Playgirls performed after the LP swore in new members in Sta. Cruz, Laguna on Thursday. Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas led the oath-taking but had already left the venue when the group performed.

The emcee at the event said the performance was a present for Rep. Agarao, who was celebrating his 58th birthday, from Tolentino. Agarao has said that Tolentino did not book the Palygirls for the performance.

"Ikinalulungkot kong nangyari ito, at nagsasagawa na ang Partido Liberal ng mas malalim na pagsisiyasat sa ugat ng pangyayari," Roxas said on Friday.

GMA News Online has reached out to Francis Tolentino for comment but he is yet to give his response.

On Thursday, Tolentino denied any hand in getting the services of Playgirls during the Laguna event.

"I was just a guest at the birthday party. I did not bring any dancer/singer. The emcee probably got misinformed," he said in a text message to media.

Also in a text message shared by Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. to media, Tolentino further explained: "Naligaw pa nga ako sa lugar. Ang problema pagdating ko parang kasunod ko yung mga singers and dancers kaya akala kasama ko. Nalito yung emcee."

Agarao has since said that hif friends were the ones who brought the women to perform. — Trisha Macas/JDS/RSJ, GMA News
