'UNA NA, BINGO PA'
VP Binay hypes tandem with Gringo in vote-rich Cebu
(Updated 3:19 p.m.) Vice President Jejomar Binay on Friday announced his tandem with Sen. Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan during the launching of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) in the Visayas, despite the senator having yet to accept Binay's offer to be his running mate.
"Lalong lumalakas, lalong tumatapang, UNA na, Bingo pa," Binay said in a speech in vote-rich Cebu, using the monicker for their tandem, a play with "Binay" and "Gringo."
Honasan, however, was not present in the event. He had earlier said he is open to be Binay's running mate although he had asked for more time to decide.
Sought for comment, UNA president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said Honasan was not expected in Cebu as he has yet to commit to be Binay's running mate.
“In the first place, he never committed to show up in Cebu, so I don’t know why they were expecting him there,” Tiangco told GMA News Online by phone.
Malacañang, for its part, reserved its comment on the “Bingo” tandem until the official announcement of Binay’s running mate.
Meanwhile, during his speech, Binay again criticized the Aquino administration for its alleged lack of concern for the people.
"Nakalulungkot at nakababahala dahil nariyan naman ang pera para tulungan ang ating mga kabayan ngunit hindi ginagastos. Nariyan din ang tulong mula sa ibang bansa na kailan lang naulat na hindi nakarating sa mga kabayan na dapat tulungan," said Binay, who has become a staunch critic of the administration since his resignation from the Cabinet in June.
Binay then zeroed in on the administration's alleged slow action in rehabilitating areas affected by the earthquake in Bohol and super typhoon Yolanda in 2013, even name-dropping Budget Secretary Butch Abad whom he accused of releasing only P21 billion of the P75 billion housing settlement budget.
"Ano ba ang problema? Hindi naman pera dahil may pera ang pamahalaan. Ang problema ay ang makupad, mabagal, teka-teka at analysis by paralysis na paglalabas ng pera ng DBM na pinamumunuan ng sikat na si Butch Abad," he said.
Binay pointed out that whoever wins in the 2016 elections needs to lift the Philippines out of poverty, create jobs for the unemployed, and restructure government service for the people.
He claimed that this could only be achieved with leaders who had experience, stressing that Filipinos could not afford to let politicians who had no record of helping the poor take charge of the country.
"Sa bigat ng mga problemang ito, ipagkakatiwala ba natin ang bansa sa hindi handa? Uulit pa ba tayo sa mga napatunayan na hindi kayang mamuno? Magbabasakali ba tayo sa mga nagsasabing sila ay para sa mahirap gayung hindi pa natin kinakitaan ng pagmamalasakit sa mahihirap?" he said.
"Kailangan ng karanasan at kakayanan para sa pagpapatakbo sa bansa. At kailangan natin ng malasakit sa kapwa. Hindi yan napag aaralan at nakukuha sa libro. Yan ay nakatanim sa puso. Di natin yan makikita sa salita kundi sa gawa, nagawa at gagawin," he added. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
