Comelec to public: Share your voting experience on social media

A top official from the Comelec is encouraging voters to share their voting experiences on social media during the 2016 polls.

"Voting is a communal activity," Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez told bloggers attending the 11th Philippine Blogging Summit on Friday at the University of the Philippines, Diliman campus in Quezon City.

With more young voters (ages 18 to 34) expected to participate in the 2016 polls, Jimenez said blogging and social media will definitely play an important role in ensuring transparency in the electoral process.

Jimenez cited Nigeria's March 2015 elections, where Nigerians took to social media their experiences, making the political exercise more transparent.

"Understand—and help others understand—that elections are not isolated events," Jimenez added, pointing out that the previous elections always have something to do with the problems Filipinos experience at present.

"Ang eleksyon ay hindi lang pang-ngayon, may pinanggalingan ito," the Comelec spokesperson also said.

He added that if Filipinos are not aware about the results of the past elections affecting the present, they will be more likely to fall for politicians' promises.

Jimenez said the Comelec will also be focusing more on voter information than education. — LBG, GMA News
