Trillanes posts bail on libel charges

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV posted P10,000 bail at the Makati Regional Trial Court on Tuesday to avoid arrest for libel charges.

The senator, who arrived from an official trip to the US early Tuesday, headed to Branch 142 of the RTC after an interview with radio dzBB's "Ikaw Na Ba? The Vice Presidential Interview."

The arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 1. Trillanes was in the US then to attend the 64th Annual National Prayer Breakfast.

The RTC sent out an arrest warrant for Trillanes after finding probable cause for the case filed against him by former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay.

The case stemmed from the comment Trillanes allegedly made that the young Binay bribed justices of the Court of Appeals to get a temporary restraining order on the six-month preventive suspension order issued by the Ombudsman in 2015.

The court had denied on Feb. 5 the senator's petition to dismiss the libel case filed by Binay.

‘Harrassment’

Trillanes said that he considers the libel case a "harassment case."

"Ito 'yung mga tactics niya kung paano niya gamitin 'yung kapangyarihan niya para sindakin 'yung kalaban niya sa pulitika," the vice presidential candidate said after posting bail.

But Trillanes remains unfazed despite spending the first day of the campaign period dealing with legal matters.

"Dito ko pinapakita na haharapin ko kung ano mang ibabato sa 'kin ni Vice President Binay," he said.

"Magkakaron kami ng iba-ibang remedies para ma-resolve itong harassment suit," he added. —KG, GMA News
