PILIPINAS DEBATES 2016

VP Binay: Stopping underspending key to development

Development will only take place if government underspending is stopped, Vice President Jejomar Binay said during the PiliPinas Debates 2016 in Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday.

In his closing remarks at the first PiliPinas Debates 2016 held at the Capitol University, Binay said poverty remains to be the most pressing problem that should be addressed by the government.

With a sizable number of Filipinos living in poverty, Binay said it is important that underspending must come to an end.

“Tigilan na po natin ang underspending. Sinasabi ko, pag underspending, underperformance. Hindi nagagamit ang dapat paggamitan, at maraming namamatay kasi hindi nabibigyan ng tamang gamot, hindi makapagpagamot sa ospital,” he said.

Aside from affecting the provision of basic services, Binay said underspending also delays government performance and construction of public infrastructure.

“Underspending, nakakaapekto ho yan, nakaka-delay ng performance. Yung mga infrastructure requirements natin na makakatulong para sa pagpapadami ng kabuhayan, hindi ho nagagawa,” he said.

Binay added that government money should be spent to jump-start national development.

“[K]ailangan tayong magdagdag at gastusin ang pera para mabago ang ating buhay,” he said. —ALG, GMA News
