Duterte won’t use No. 1 license plate on presidential vehicle

Incoming president Rodrigo Duterte and his Cabinet members will not use protocol license plates on their respective vehicles.

"Yung plaka ng presidente, itapon mo 'yan," Duterte said in a press conference at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City late Thursday night.

The Executive Order No. 400 assigns the number 1 as the license plate number of the president.

"Masyadong corny 'yan, number 1, number 1 na plaka," said Duterte, who earlier expressed his annoyance with certain courtesies and protocols accorded a government official.

Duterte added that his cabinet members will also not use the official license plates.

"Tsaka yang cabinet members, no more (official plates) also," Duterte said.

Members of the Cabinet use the number 6 as their protocol plate number.

Duterte cited his grandson as the reason why he won't use the official license plates to show humility.

"I have a grandson, Ilokano from Paoay, and he would tell you, 'gusto ng lolo ko mag-hambel (humble) na lang tayo.'," Duterte said.

"Nagbiruan nga kami, 'Duterte ah, ngayon presidente ka na dapat ham-bel ka'," he added.

However, the incoming president said he would not prevent officials from the legislative branch and the judiciary from using their protocol plates.

"Hayaan mo 'yang congressman at senador. Hayaan mo 'yang judiciary kung gusto nila," Duterte said. —John Ted Cordero/NB, GMA News
