Duterte asked to reconsider Marcos burial at Libingan ng mga Bayani

A group founded by Martial Law victims is asking President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider his vocal approval of having the remains of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

In an interview on Monday, Ma. Christina Rodriguez, executive director of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Memorial Foundation, acknowledged that Duterte's endorsement has the weight to make the widely opposed burial happen, hence their call for him to rethink his earlier pronouncement.

"Meron kasi sa batas ang presidente bilang commander-in-chief, isa sa mga nagsasabing, 'Itong taong ito, ililibing natin sa Libingan ng mga Bayani.' Nandoon naman 'yun. Hindi naman sinasabing wala sa kaniyang lugar na magsabi," Rodriguez said.

"Kaya lang, ang hinihingi natin sa kaniya—hindi pa siya presidente, 'di ba?—ang hinihingi natin sa kaniya, pag-isipan niyang mabuti, kasi meron pang panahon para bawiin niya 'yun," she added.

"Hindi talaga 'yan makakatulong sa sinasabi niyang pagkakaroon ng pagkakaisa para matapos na ang paghihiwalay ng mamamayang Filipino kasi kung iisipin mo, buong mamamayang Filipino, maliban siguro sa isang kalingkingang hindi, ayaw na mailibing sa Libingan ng mga Bayani si Marcos," she went on.

Following his landslide victory in the May 9 elections, Duterte said he would make good of his campaign promise to allow Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, adding that "can be arranged immediately." 

The incoming president said this would be done "not because he (Marcos) was a hero but because he was a Filipino soldier," and also to address the "division" it has caused among Filipinos.

Rodriguez said the former president, who led the country under Martial rule in the 1970s, had been "dishonorable" and lied about his credentials as a military man.

"Kung ikaw ay isang estudyante at nahuli kang nandaraya ng eskwela mo, siyempre paaalisin ka ng eskwela, or at the very least merong disciplinary action na ibibigay sa'yo. Ngayon, nahuli na si Marcos na nandaya sa militar. Nag-claim siya ng mga maling medal, ng mga fake medals. Hindi 'yan guess, marami nang nag-research, lumabas na sa New York Times. Siya ay nandaya massively. Hindi lang isang medalya—30 plus medals," she said.

She added: "Number 2 siya ay nag-claim na meron siyang maharlikang grupo, 'yung sila ay guerilla, sila ay lumaban. Hindi naman sila totoong lumaban kasi siya ay isang intel(ligence) personnel. Wala siya sa pakikipigdigma. Pati 'yun, niloko-loko niya ang militar. Ike-claim mo bang honor kapag katabi mo siya? Marami diyan [sa Libingan ng mga Bayani] namatay sa pakikipagdigma para sa bayan."

Rodriguez also said the move will make the advocacy to reeducate the younger generation about Martial Law much more difficult.

"Ewan ko kung maaapektuhan ang kasaysayan, pero 'yung pagtuturo sa kabataan, hirap na hirap na nga tayong ipaliwanag dahil hindi naituro nang mabuti 'yung aral ng Martial Law, bibigyan mo pa ng ganito? Makakatulong lang sa kalituhan," she said.

She added: "Bukod doon sa kalituhan ng kabataan, masakit 'yung dibdib ng mga totoong nagbigay ng buhay nila, namatay dahil dugo talaga 'yung ibinuhos nila sa bayan. Itatabi mo ngayon sa ipinahiya niya 'yung bayan?"

She pointed out that there is "strong public opinion" against burying Marcos at the Libingan, and added that their group—formerly led by the late Sen. Jovito Salonga—will continue to fight against this. — Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/KBK, GMA News
