PCOO to be renamed to PCO under Duterte admin – Andanar

A leaner communications office with an acronym that’s one letter shorter than the current Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) will be taking care of communicating President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s messages to the public starting June 30.

On Monday, incoming Communications Secretary Martin Andanar announced his plans to rename the PCOO into the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) following a meeting with his counterpart in the Aquino administration, Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr.

As part of efforts to streamline Malacañang’s communication activities, Andanar said the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) will become just another division within the PCO.

“Simple na lang siguro ang division na 'yon ... magiging strategic communications division ng PCO,” he said.

The PCDSPO, headed by Undersecretary Manuel Quezon III is currently separate from the PCOO. It is responsible for the publication of the Official Gazette, forming the government’s communications strategy, writing the President’s speeches and public statements, and undertaking surveys and research.

It was created when the Aquino administration started in 2010.

The PCOO, meanwhile, is in charge of government-owned media entities, as well as coordination with the private media.

Andanar said having a leaner communications office will mean there will no longer be any confusion about its setup.

He said he will be the sole authority reporting to Duterte on communication matters.

“Isa na lang ang magre-report sa Presidente, iyong Secretary na lang ng PCO at pati po 'yung spokesperson, pagdating sa kanyang mga administrative work ay ako na po ang magre-report sa Gabinete para isa lang po ang panggagalingan ng report, administratively,” Andanar said.

Even if the PCDSPO will only become a division within the PCO, the incoming Communications Secretary said his office will continue releasing issues of the Official Gazette both in print and online.  — Xianne Arcangel/RSJ, GMA News
