Singer Freddie Aguilar accepts NCCA appointment

Filipino music icon and hitmaker Freddie Aguilar confirmed that he accepted President Rodrigo Duterte's request for him to head the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday said.

Aguilar also said he sees the need to create a separate department for culture and the arts.

“Actually ibibigay niya ‘yung departamento, kaya lang sabi ng office niya sa pamamagitan ni Bong Go, ang sabi niya, ‘Sir Freddie habang wala pa po ‘yung department, puwede daw po ba ninyong pamunuan ang NCCA?'” he said.

Aguilar said it was Christopher Bong Go, the special assistant to the President, who called and asked him to head the NCCA.

“Sabi ko naman, 'Okay, gagawin ko ‘yan. Sino ba naman ako para tumanggi sa isang Pangulo?'” he said.

He also explained that his comment about transferring the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal in Luneta Park to address the “photobombing” issue is but a suggestion.

The musician drew flak on social media in the past few days when he said in a televised interview that he would switch the monument of Rizal and one of the carabao statues in the park.

According to Aguilar, whoever gave permission to erect the building should be held accountable for the issue.

However, he stressed that the public should learn to accept the change in the landscape of Manila as it progresses. —Kiersnerr Gerwin Tacadena/KG, GMA News
