No extension of registration period for barangay, SK polls —Comelec chief

There will be no extension of the July 30 deadline of the voter registration period for the October 31 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres Bautista said Tuesday.

"No extension as it would impact our preparation of the Project of Precincts for the elections," Bautista said, as he urged the public to take advantage of the four remaining days to register.

"We still have a few days left and we hope they will not wait for the last minute before heading to their Offices of Election Officers," he said.

A total of 1,181,139 have registered from July 15 to 23 for the barangay and SK elections, based on the Comelec's latest tally.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez asked deactivated voters to take advantage of the registration period to reactivate their registration records.

"If you failed to vote in the Barangay Elections of 2013 and in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections, you will not be able to vote in the coming Barangay and SK elections unless you reactivate," he said.

Based on Comelec data a total of 2,284,743 voters were deactivated after their failure to participate in two consecutive national elections. Of the number, only 83,717 sought reactivation in the first nine days of the registration period. —KBK, GMA News
