‘Bilibid’ chaplain resigns as BuCor spokesperson

Msgr. Roberto ‘Bobby’ Olaguer, the chaplain of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa, on Saturday announced that he has resigned from his post as spokesperson of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) following his revelation that inmates are complaining against members of the Special Action Forces (SAF).

“Nag-resign na ako as spokesperson ng Bureau of Corrections since Monday. May nabitawan akong salita noong last week na totoo naman na nakaka[sira] daw sa image ng bureau o ng staff," Olaguer said in a radio interview.

Olaguer last Saturday bared unverified claims that the newly-installed SAF officers have been harassing prisoners at the NBP.

"Di ko naman pwede bawiin yun. Tinanggap naman at mag-a-assign na lang daw ng iba," he said.

The SAF members started taking over the security of critical areas at the NBP last week.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre and Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa pushed for the posting of SAF commandos at the penitentiary to discourage illegal activity and special accommodations for certain inmates.

Olaguer said that over 200 employees of the NBP, including jail guards at the Camp Vicente Lim in Laguna, attended a training session to boost their morale, which took a blow after they were accused of being scalawags. —John Ted Cordero/ALG, GMA News
