CJ Sereno won’t answer Duterte’s tirades against her, judiciary

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Wednesday declined to hit back at President Rodrigo Duterte following the latter's remarks against her and the judiciary.

Speaking before soldiers on Tuesday at a military camp in Cagayan de Oro City, Duterte raised the possibility of declaring martial law if the judiciary will get in the way of his ongoing war against illegal drugs.

"Many things have been said. The Chief Justice sees no need to add to what are being said," Sereno said in a statement read by Supreme Court (SC) Public Information Office chief Theodore Te.

Responding to questions, Te said he could not say if Sereno was able to watch the 40-minute speech on Tuesday night.

The SC spokesman also said he was unaware if the chief magistrate would raise the matter with her colleagues in the SC en banc.

"This is her only statement. I would not add to it," Te said.

Duterte on Tuesday also slammed Sereno for telling judges that Duterte linked to illegal drugs, not to surrender to authorities if there were no warrants of arrest against them.

Of the seven judges, only four are still in the service and are now subjects of a fact finding investigation to be handled by retired SC Justice Roberto Abad. —NB, GMA News
