Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa expressed alarm on Tuesday about the involvement of more than 300 police officers in the illegal drug trade.
“Sa standard ko, marami na (ang involved) dahil gusto ko zero drug tolerant ako. Ayaw ko kahit isang pulis ko involved sa droga. Pero ito sobra sa 10, sobra 100, sobra 300. Mabigat sa akin,” Dela Rosa said during the Senate hearing on the spate of killings of drug suspects.
In his presentation during the hearing, the PNP chief said noted that out of the more than 300 PNP personnel endorsed for transfer because of their links to the drug trade, 284 have been already been transferred while 16 have either been dismissed, are absent without leave, or were suspended. Three police personnel cannot be located.
He believed the number of policemen linked to the drug trade would go up as the administration continues its campaign against illegal drugs.
“Honestly tataas pa yan dahil sa war on drugs, maraming lumabas na information. Ang watch list, nabulaga kami sa mga info na may tumatatanggap na ganito o nagbebenta na ganito,” he said.
Dela Rosa thanked the public for providing the information.
“Kasi naging whole of nation approach na. Lahat ng communities nagsusupply na ng information,” Dela Rosa said.
In an interview after the hearing, Dela Rosa said he expects the number of those involved in illegal drugs to reach 1,600.
“One percent of 160,000 (members of PNP) is 1,600, most likely like that, more or less yun ang aking estimate (ng involved sa illegal drug operations),” he said.
Asked by Senator Bam Aquino during the hearing on what should be done to police officers involved in illegal drugs, the PNP chief stopped short of saying that he wanted them dead.
“If I have my way, di ko na lang sasabihin pero di ko ma-imagine na pulis, you swore to protect tapos ikaw ang magdo-droga. Di ko na sasabihin, alam ko na alam mo ang ibig ko sabihin,” he said.
“Gigil na gigil ako,” he added.
He said police officers involved in illegal operation are now slowly being eased out and transferred to other regions
“As of now, this I can assure you na ang pulis na markado na at kasama sa sindikato sa droga, dahan dahan na nawawala,” Dela Rosa said.
“Kasi pag nakikita sila ng taumbayan na andyan pa hindi na maniniwala ang taongbayan sa amin,” he added. — VVP, GMA News
