Why Manny Pacquiao moved for De Lima’s ouster as justice panel chair

Senator Manny Pacquiao on Monday night defended his motion for the Senate to oust Senator Leile De Lima as chair of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

Pacquiao moved to declare the justice panel vacant days after a confessed former vigilante killer testified before the committee that President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the summary execution of suspected criminals in Davao City when he was mayor.

Pacquiao, who also hails from Mindanao, is a close ally of Duterte.

"Gusto po natin na ang committee ay para sa taong bayan, hindi lang pangsarili," Pacquiao said in a television interview.

Before Pacquiao's motion, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano delivered a scathing privilege speech, accusing De Lima of using the committee to go after Duterte.

Cayetano was Duterte's running mate in the 2016 elections.

De Lima walked out during the delivery of the privilege speech. She said she would answer the allegations in her own speech on Tuesday.

In an interview on "24 Oras," De Lima accused Duterte of causing her ouster. —NB, GMA News
