Filipino fishermen recover US sea drone in West Philippine Sea

Filipino fishermen recovered a sea drone in the West Philippine Sea on Friday.

A News TV Live report said the sea drone was recovered by the fishermen in waters off Masinloc, Zambales.

Photos sent by Dario Diaz, chief of the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Masinloc, showed that the yellow sea drone was marked National Oceanographic Office of the United States.

It was labeled as an "oceanographic instrument." The drone also had an email address navociano.cdo@navy.mil.

Diaz said the fishermen were sailing back to Masinloc when they found the sea drone.

The report said the unmanned underwater glider is usually used in marine research.

The local fishermen were still in possession of the sea drone, the report added.

Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said the fishermen should turn over the recovered sea drone to the Philippine Coast Guard station in Masinloc.

"Dapat ay masarin rin ng mga mangingisda ang exact location kung saan ito nakita," Padilla said.

He said that a similar sea drone had been recovered in Infanta, Quezon.

"Maaaring natangay lang ito ng alon mula sa ibang lugar, hindi natin masasabi," he said. —ALG, GMA News
