Imee Marcos: Don’t expect a ‘legal admission of guilt’ from us

Despite repeatedly seeking forgiveness for her father's wrongdoings during his two-decade rule, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos reiterated on Saturday night that Martial Law victims cannot expect a "legal admission of guilt" from her family.

In a report on Balitanghali on Sunday, the governor admitted that the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. committed mistakes during his presidency, but said it was inevitable as he was only human.

A legal admission of guilt from the Marcos family, however, would be unlikely, the governor said.

Iyon ang hinahanap nila, eh malabo naman," she said.

She said her family would continue defending themselves in the various pending cases against them.

During a dinner celebration for his father's 99th birth anniversary in Ilocos Norte last September, the governor appealed to her father's critics to forgive him for his wrongdoings while in office.

Two months later, in an interview with Jessica Soho on GMA News TV's "State of the Nation," she once again sought forgiveness for his father, asking everyone to move on already.

On Saturday, the governor asked for forgiveness anew for the "unexpected" incidents during Martial Law, saying there was never an intention to hurt anyone during those times.

The governor made the statement in reaction to the statement of former President Fidel Ramos that the Marcos family owes the country an apology for the abuses committed during Martial Law. —Mark Merueñas/ALG, GMA News
