Rescued PHL Eagle named 'Sakura' in honor of Japanese PM Abe

A Philippine Eagle was named "Sakura" in honor of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his two-day official visit in the Philippines.

President Rodrigo Duterte led the eagle-naming ceremony and adoption at the Water Insular Hotel in his hometown of Davao City where Abe and his wife Akie Abe spent their second day in the Philippines.

A framed photo of Sakura was given to Abe for the ceremony.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation said Sakura is a juvenile female Philippine Eagle rescued from Talaingod, Davao del Norte. She was turned over to PEF on December 12, 2016.

The eagle was seen standing at a riverbank by the indigenous Ata Manobos who were night-hunting for frogs. It had a wound on the lower left of its abdomen caused by an air gun.

Authorities are still searching for Sakura's parents.  —Trisha Macas/KBK, GMA News
