WAY PAST 6-MONTH DEADLINE

Duterte to extend drug war until end of term

President Rodrigo Duterte announced early Monday that he would extend the war on drugs until the end of his term.

"I will extend it until the end of my term," Duterte said in a press briefing in Malacañang that started late Sunday night.

More than 2,000 drug suspects have been killed in police operations and hundreds more were executed by unidentified gunmen.

Duterte who won the May 2016 elections has a six-year term.

Duterte promised during the May elections campaign to eradicate anti-illegal drugs trade in six months.

He, however, asked the public last September that he would need to extend the government's war on drugs for another six months.

He said that when he became the President, he found out that the country has a deeper drug problem.

Duterte had released several list of public officials suspected of having involvement in the illegal drug trade.

The latest list includes more than 1,000 names. —ALG, GMA News
