AFTER DUTERTE’S WARNING

Gierran says no one in NBI involved in Jee Ick Joo kidnap-slay

Nobody from the National Bureau of Investigation is involved in the kidnap-slay of Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo, NBI director Dante Gierran said on Monday.

Gierran made the remark after President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to relieve him of his duties if he failed to produce the NBI "assets" that were involved in the alleged tokhang-for-ransom operation.

"Wala po," Gierran said at a press conference when asked if anybody from the NBI was involvement in the heinous crime.

"Siguro akong wala. Sigurado ako 101 percent," he added.

Police officers reportedly abducted Jee from his Pampanga home in October. Despite a ransom demand, Jee was killed and cremated, his ashes flushed down a toilet.

The abduction was allegedly committed under the guise of the government's campaign against illegal drugs.

Duterte at a news conference in Malacañang on Sunday night said the NBI should produce the two NBI assets allegedly involved in the crime or else Gierran would be relieved.

"I will not resign, wala akong ginawang katarantaduhan, kalokohan, so hindi ako dapat magreresign," Gierran said.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre and Gierran presented during the Monday press conference Jerry Omlang, a supposed civilian asset of the NBI hired by the suspects to carry out the crime.

However, the NBI said Omlang has never been a confidential asset of the bureau.

Omlang was described as a volunteer who would do odd jobs for certain offices at the NBI. —NB, GMA News
