De Lima’s handwritten letter: ‘My whole being cries out for truth, justice’

Senator Leila de Lima penned a letter to her supporters and loved ones after almost a week in detention over drug-related charges.

The letter reads:

“Dear all/loved ones:

While I’m psychologically prepared for this, my whole being cries out for truth and justice. My heart also bleeds for all other victims of injustice, those who were falsely accused and now cramped in severely congested jails.

But God, who is all-knowing and infinitely good and just will make sure that EVIL will not triumph. I pray for more strength and fortitude. Let’s all be strong. Love you all.”

The letter was signed by De Lima herself on March 1.

Copies of the letter were distributed by her staff to members of the Senate media.

De Lima has been detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center for almost a week after she surrendered to authorities on February 24 over drug-related charges.

In a separate statement, she reiterated her innocence, saying she was falsely accused by President Rodrigo Duterte, as a way of getting revenge.

“Alam ko, at alam ng Panginoon ang totoo: Inosente ako. Ginagawa ko lang ang aking trabaho. Kahit malinaw na imbento lamang ang paratang sa akin, bakit nagagawa pa rin nilang basta baluktutin ang hustisya at ikubli ang totoo?” De Lima said.

The senator is facing charges for her alleged involvement in the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison during her term as Justice secretary.

De Lima spearheaded a Senate probe into extrajudicial killings of suspected drug pushers that occurred since Duterte took his oath of office on June 30. She was then chair of the justice committee.

One of the witnesses presented during the probe was Edgar Matobato who said Duterte ordered the killing of some people during his term as Davao City mayor. —KG, GMA News
