AHEAD OF POPE FRANCIS, CANADA'S TRUDEAU

Duterte takes early lead in TIME 100 poll

TIME Magazine on Friday opened the polls for TIME 100, an annual list featuring the most influential people in the world.

President Rodrigo Duterte is among the world leaders in the shortlist released by TIME.

Duterte has attracted global attention for his war against drugs, a crusade that invited heavy scrutiny from international human rights groups — all of which Duterte has dismissed as meddling with internal affairs of the country.

He was recently featured in an investigative piece by The New York Times. The profile comes months after a front-page story on his war on drugs, published in August 2016.

As of Sunday morning (Manila time), Duterte leads the poll with 4%.

Completing the Top 10 are Pope Francis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Beyoncé, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Bill Gates, US Senator Bernie Sanders, Simone Biles, Serena Williams, and the co-chairs of the Women's March, Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez, and Bob Bland.

Duterte, Trudeau, and Merkel are joined on the shortlist by other world leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatullah Ali Khamenei.

From Asia, Alibaba's Jack Ma, Nintendo's Tatsumi Kimishima, and Fan Bingbing made the shortlist. Asian-Americans Constance Wu and Satya Nadella are also on the list.

Voting closes on April 16 and the official list will be released on April 20.

TIME said its editors will choose the final list of honorees, but it wants the readers to share their choices. —ALG, GMA News
