Bato admits he wants to be senator, but unsure about 2019 run

Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa on Thursday admitted he wants to become a senator one day, but said he was unsure about running in 2019.

Ang akin lang makatulong ako sa bayan sa pamamaraan ng pagiging senador e why not,” he said in a radio interview

Dela Rosa initially did not want to say he was open to running, saying it would just make him an open target of his detractors.

“Wala akong pera panggastos... Hahanap ng paraan iyan, gigibain ako,” he said.

He cited the case of former Vice President Jejomar Binay, an early frontrunner during the May 2016 presidential polls, and then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, a late entrant to the race where he eventually emerged victorious.

He added that he is not closing his door on the idea of running.

You have to  keep your options open,” he said.

Told that he should watch his performance if he really wants to seek the post, Dela Rosa said: “Ako I’m not trying hard.

He said when he retires in January 2018, he plans to return to his hometown.

“Uuwi doon sa amin sa Bato, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur at mamimingwit ng isda sa tabing dagat,” he said.

Asked if he wants to be appointed to other post, the PNP chief said he will let Duterte decide.

I’m still very healthy,” he said.

He said he has no preference as to the position.

—JST, GMA News
