Isnilon Hapilon not a graduate of UP, admin clarifies

The University of the Philippines issued a statement on Wednesday denying that Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon is a graduate of the school.

"Upon verification with the official records of the Office of the University Registrar and the Office of Alumni Affairs, the University of the Philippines can find no record of a former student or alumnus by the name of Isnilon Hapilon," read the announcement issued by the Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs.

"This clarification is being made in light of recent news reports identifying Mr. Hapilon as a UP graduate," it added in a Facebook post.

Some news outlets have identified Hapilon as a graduate of UP.

The FBI also had on its website the information that Hapilon graduated from the UP School of Engineering.

Wanted by both the Philippine and US military, Hapilon is reportedly in Marawi City holed up with Maute group members.

On May 23, government troops launched an operation against Hapilon following information from residents that he was in an apartment in Marawi City together with Maute group members.

Attacks were made by the Maute group in the city, torching some areas.

President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law on Mindanao on the same day.
