Duterte meets Kian delos Santos’ parents at Palace clubhouse

President Rodrigo Duterte met the parents of slain 17-year-old Kian Loyd delos Santos in Malacañang Park on Monday.

The meeting took place at the Malago Clubhouse after Duterte's visit to the bird flu-hit Pampanga province.

The Delos Santos family reportedly requested the meeting with Duterte.

Also present at the meeting were Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, Public Attorney's Office chief Persida Acosta, and Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption chairman Dante Jimenez.

Aguirre said the meeting "went smoothly."

"Everything went smoothly and President Duterte explained to the parents of Kian why he could not go to the wake of Kian. He wanted to wait for the result of the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] investigation," Aguirre told GMA News Online.

"The President addressed the immediate needs of the parents occasioned by the killing of Kian."

Delos Santos was killed in what was reported as an anti-drug operation in Caloocan City two weeks ago.

His death spawned protests against Duterte's anti-drug war and the series of alleged extrajudicial killings blamed on the police.

Delos Santos, 17, was buried at La Loma Cemetery in Caloocan City on Saturday.

In an interview , Duterte said he called up PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa after he saw the alleged CCTV footage of the policemen dragging away the 12th grader on a street.

He said he ordered the policemen involved detained.

The police claimed that Delos Santos resisted arrest and fought back but witnesses and the CCTV footage said and showed otherwise.

The teenager's death, which triggered massive public outrage and calls for a stop to Duterte's violent drug war, is currently the subject of at least two separate investigations by the police and the Senate. —NB/KVD, GMA News
