Analyst’s take on EU, PHL relations

The diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the European Union (EU) is more than just about aid but also on about sources of assistance beneficial to Filipinos, GMA resident analyst Richard Heydarian said Monday.

In an interview on News To Go, Heydarian said the EU serves as one of the country's main sources of Official Development Assistance and Foreign Direct Investments — aids that are given via grants and not loans.

Heydian also said the EU is the third source of foreign tourists and fourth origin of remittance from overseas Filipino workers, among others.

He also warned of the Philippines' possible withdrawal from the EU Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus program, a scheme where the country enjoys zero duties on its exports.

Heydarian made the remark amid President Rodrigo Duterte's statement that he is not bothered if ever the Philippines is expelled from the United Nations. —Joseph Tristan Roxas/KBK, GMA News
