UP still top PHL university in QS Asia rankings, but falls to 75th spot

Despite falling five places, the University of the Philippines (UP) remained the top Philippine university in Asia, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings for 2018.

Based on the QS report published on Tuesday, UP dropped to 75th place after being the 70th top university in the last two rankings but still remained as the country's premier university.

"UP Diliman is the flagship university of the UP System. It is the administrative seat of the system as well as an autonomous university in its own right," the QS website said.

"UP Diliman is not only the home of diverse colleges, offering 94 graduate and undergraduate courses, it also runs several centers of research, many of which have been declared by the Commission on Higher Education as National Centers of Excellence," it added.

Siliman University also declined in the rankings after the Dumaguete-based institution slid to 351-400 from 251-300 last year.

UP and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), nonetheless, remained as the only two Philippine universities which made it to the top 100.

ADMU ranked 95th in the 2018 rankings, up four notches from 99th last year.

The De La Salle University and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) also improved in the QS rankings at 134th and 145th, respectively.

UST is the only Philippine university which received four QS stars.

According to the QS website, the star rating system “allows students to get a wider picture of an institution's qualities, looking at everything from employability of graduates, to sports facilities and community engagement.”

The University of San Carlos in Cebu maintained its 301-350 ranking.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo de Davao University and Xavier University were unable to make the cut after being 251-300 and 301-350, respectively, in the report last year.

NUS dethroned

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore dethroned the National University of Singapore, which slipped to second place, as the top Asian university in the QS 2018 report.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong completed the top five Asian universities.

QS uses nine indicators to compile the University Rankings: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations paper, papers per faculty, staff with a doctorate degree, proportion of international faculty and students, and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students. — MDM, GMA News
