Duterte says unimpressed with Ombudsman's move vs Mabilog

President Rodrigo Duterte was unimpressed with the Office of the Ombudsman's decision to have Jed Patrick Mabilog dismissed as Iloilo City's mayor.

In a speech in Davao City on Friday, Duterte argued that Mabilog's dismissal was long overdue.

"Mabilog is, I think a cousin of [opposition Senator Franklin] Drilon. Wala na. The Ombudsman, in a very, very late gesture, para kunwari na sinuportahan nila ako, fired, stripped him of his mayorship," the president said.

Duterte had alleged that Mabilog was involved in the illegal drug trade, and once warned the then Iloilo City mayor that he should cut his ties with drug lords.

The Ombudsman's Office had earlier angered Duterte when it started an investigation into the president's alleged multibillion-peso bank accounts. Overall Deputy Ombudsman Arthur Carandang led the investigation, which stemmed from Senator Antonio Trillanes IV's complaint.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales inhibited herself from the probe since her nephew, lawyer Manases Carpio, is Duterte's son-in-law. — DVM, GMA News
