Public reminded anew of road restrictions as ASEAN summit approaches

The public was reminded once more of the traffic restrictions to be imposed in Metro Manila due to the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and Related Meetings.

In a report on 24 Oras on Friday, Emmanuel Miro of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) advised motorists to avoid EDSA, NLEX, and SCTEX as movement in all three routes will be limited during the whole duration of the event.

Plastic barriers have been installed to separate two inner lanes along EDSA that will be used as exclusive ASEAN lanes for world leaders who would be traveling on land from Clark International Airport in Pampanga to their accommodations in Metro Manila.

These lanes can only be used by the public once all diplomats and leaders have arrived at their meetings and during heavy traffic.

About 3,000 MMDA traffic enforcers will be deployed every 800 meters starting November 8 to implement special traffic protocols such as stopping traffic to allow convoys to pass through uninterrupted.

Enforcers and security will also make sure that the traffic lockdown in designated areas will be observed.

MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago announced the schedule of the lockdowns in a previous interview on News To Go.

Lockdown

The CCP Complex will be locked down from midnight of November 8 to noon on November 15; the routes around SMX Convention Center will be off-limits from 10 p.m. on November 11 to midnight of November 13; Roxas Boulevard and Buendia to P. Burgos will be locked down on November 13 from 12 a.m. to 12 noon.

Routes that will be on high alert or closed off for use of leaders and diplomats participating in the ASEAN Summit include the Clark Complex, NLEX, SLEX, SCTEX, Roxas Boulevard, Ayala, Makati Avenue, Pasay, Lawton, to Makati.

Closed vans and trucks will be re-routed from NLEX to MacArthur Highway from noon on November 11 to November 15.

Finally, the perimeter from H20 Hotel to Okada Hotel, New Seaside Drive and Manila Bay will be declared a no sail zone from November 5 to 16.

Gun ban

A gun ban will be in effect from November 1 to 15 in Metro Manila, Region 3, and 4A, while rescue operations for street dwellers around areas that ASEAN leaders will pass through will continue.

Manila Social Welfare chief Nanet Tanyag repeated that these rescue operations are still part of an ongoing effort by the Department of Social Welfare Department (DSWD) to help street dwellers and should not be misconstrued as a security measure for the ASEAN Summit.

"Walang directive sa amin ang National Government. Wala kaming dadalhan na resort na katulad nung dati na itatago," Tanyag said. — Rie Takumi/MDM, GMA News
