The newly-installed chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, has been promoted to the rank of general on Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and AFP Vice Chief of staff Lt. Gen. Salvador Melchor Mison Jr. donned the four-star insignia on General Guerrero.

The donning of rank ceremony was held at the new Philippine Air Force Hall of Flags, Headquarters, Villamor Air Base, Pasay City.

On October 26, Guerrero took over the top military post a day after President Rodrigo Duterte signed his appointment papers. He replaced AFP chief Eduardo Año who has reached the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Guerrero is set to retire on December 17 but Lorenzana has said that he will recommend to the President the extension of the AFP chief’s tenure.

Prior to his appointment, Guerrero headed the Davao-based Eastern Mindanao Command.

He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Maharlika” Class of 1984.

Guerrero is a seasoned field commander who once headed the Army's 3rd Infantry Division commander, the 701st Infantry Brigade, and the Task Force Davao. He also served as Army chief of staff.

He is a four-time recipient of the Distinguished Service Star; Order of Lakan Dula (Degree of Commander); Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree of Officer); and Honorary  Airborne Wings from the Royal Thai Army, among others. — BAP, GMA News
