More 'fake news' sites blacklisted by NUJP, CMFR

The Google Chrome plug-in developed to alert Facebook users of fake news content is now raising red flags on at least 48 websites compared to only 13 when it was launched in June last year.

The Fakeblok plug-in is a joint initiative of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR). Blacklisted websites are verified by NUJP's panel of journalist-reviewers.

NUJP secretary general Dabet Panelo said that, "Yung mga fake news, pinapang-aralan mo siya. Ang unang una mong mapapansin na similar sa kanila, dun sa  'contact us.' Wala siyang laman, ibig sabihin walang mananagot sa kung ano mang balita ."

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has come up with its own list of websites and blogsites which carry fake or unverified news.

The Philippines ranks sixth in the world in terms of active Facebook users with some 63 million Filipinos regularly logging in, according to We Are Social's Digital Global Overview.
