Patients injected with Dengvaxia ‘fully recovered’ after prolonged dengue fever —Sanofi

Persons not previously infected by dengue before receiving the dengue vaccine Dengvaxia have "fully recovered" after suffering from "prolonged high fever," manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur claimed in a statement dated Wednesday.

Sanofi said its new analysis showed "more cases of hospitalization and severe disease" among vaccinated seronegatives or patients who have not been infected by dengue prior to immunization compared to unvaccinated study participants.

However, "all these cases fully recovered" after a "prolonged high fever of two days or more and transient abnormal laboratory findings."

In spite of this, Sanofi proposed to national health regulators to "amend the label for the vaccine to target use in people with prior dengue infection."

Meanwhile, Sanofi maintained that Dengvaxia still remained beneficial in countries "where dengue is widespread."

The French manufacturer asserted that Dengvaxia provided "persistent protective benefit against dengue fever, including hospitalizations and severe illness due to dengue, for people with past dengue infection, who are the majority of people living in countries where dengue is widespread."

"In dengue endemic countries with a high proportion of the population with previous dengue infection, or with high burden of dengue disease, the potential benefits of vaccination are significant," Sanofi wrote.

Sanofi stressed that it shared its new data on the dengue vaccine "transparently and immediately with the WHO (World Health Organization), local health authorities and the dengue expert community."

"As of December 6th, 2017, Sanofi continues working transparently to facilitate WHO consideration of the new data on the dengue vaccine and we hope to see the updated WHO recommendation on the vaccine soon," Sanofi wrote.

The WHO on Tuesday clarified that it did not recommend the introduction of Dengvaxia into national immunization programs, and instead outlined a series of considerations based on available data at the time. — MDM, GMA News
