Office of the VP gets ISO-9001:2015 certification

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) has complied with an executive order for certain government offices as it received quality management certification ISO-9001:2015, an accomplishment Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday said was part of a bid to “reinvent” the office.

The certification was first announced on the Vice President’s official Facebook page on December 18 after the OVP passed the accreditation process of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The official awarding was held on December 28, and the certificate was given to Robredo by Tristan Loveres, managing director of TÜV Rheinland Philippines, which conducted the two-day audit.

In a speech during the awarding, Robredo recalled the OVP’s “depressing” state, the “gloomy” workforce, and the bulk of complaints when she stepped into power, and said she and her staff have since sought to offer relevant and beyond-ceremonial services.

“At itong ISO certification [ay] nagpapakita na kung may gusto kang makamtan, kailangan mong pagpaguran, at alam natin kung gaano kayo lahat nagpagod para makamtan natin ‘to,” she told her staff, claiming that the OVP’s services have improved.

She called the ISO certification the “exclamation point” to the office’s “good year” and commended her staff for their effort, saying a fulfillment with one’s job leads to better services.

According to a press release from the OVP, the office’s Angat Buhay program has assisted 83,807 families, generated P145 million in assistance through their private partnerships, and is assisting more than 170 communities around the Philippines.

"It has likewise contributed to relief operations for areas affected by calamities, and extends other forms of assistance like those for medical concerns," said the press release.

The ISO is an international standard-setting body that ensures through documents and guidelines that “materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose” in organizations.

According to the ISO’s website, an ISO 9001:2015 certification requires an organization to be able to “consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements” and to “aim to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.”

Executive Order No. 605 decrees that all departments and agencies under the Executive branch, all government-owned and/or controlled corporations and government financial institutions adopt the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems (ISO-QMS), and have their quality management systems certified for “demonstrated conformity” with the standard.

State universities and colleges, local government units, the judiciary, the legislature and Constitutional offices are encouraged by the EO "to develop ISO-QMS and pursue certification." —KG, GMA News
