Almost 8k families affected by Agaton —NDRRMC


Heavy rains and floods caused by Tropical Depression Agaton has affected nearly 8,000 families, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.

NDRRMC said in a situational report that a total of 7,989 families or 33,084 persons were affected in 189 barangays in Mimaropa Region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Caraga Region.

Of which, 2,171 families or 8,926 persons were staying in 55 evacuation centers while 332 families or 1,437 persons sought shelter outside the evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, there were 186 areas in Bicol Region and Western Visayas reported to be flooded due to Agaton.

Iloilo-Capiz road in the province of Capiz was reported not passable as of January 2 due to flooding. Motorists were advised to take the Aklan-Capiz road as an alternate route.

NDRRMC also reported that 80 houses were damaged in Mimaropa Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga Region and in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Two reported deaths in Cebu is still being verified by the NDRRMC.

Agaton which has intensified into a tropical storm exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday afternoon. —NB, GMA News
