FROM CRUEL TO COMPASSIONATE

Faeldon given pass from detention, changes mind about Gordon

Former Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon has been granted a humanitarian furlough by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

In a statement released Friday, Faeldon expressed gratitude to Blue Ribbon Committee chairman Senator Richard Gordon for the committee's decision.

"Maraming salamat po sa SBRC Chairman Richard Gordon for your decency and compassion," Faeldon said in a statement that he posted on Twitter.

"Masasaksihan ko na ang pagsilang ng aking bunsong anak, mayayakap ko na ang mga mahal ko sa buhay, makakapag-oath taking na ako sa DND-OCD as Deputy Administrator III, at makapag-papagamot na ako sa aking cardiologist," he added.

A few days before, Faeldon issued an earlier statement accusing  Gordon of "cruelty" in depriving him of certain privileges over the holidays.

Gordon denied the cruelty accusation and explained that Faeldon's request for furlough could not be granted.

Gordon cited the Committee's concern for his safety, as well as the former Custom commissioner's being cited for contempt after refusing to answer questions during the Committee's inquiry into corruption at the Bureau of Customs in relation to his alleged involvement in the P6.4 billion shabu shipment that entered the country last May. —Margaret Claire Layug/NB, GMA News
