PISTON transport strike to push through Monday

The Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON) said a massive transport strike on Monday will push through.

A News TV Live report said PISTON is expecting 60,000 jeepney drivers to join the strike in Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Batangas and Northern Mindanao.

PISTON leader George San Mateo said areas in Metro Manila that will centers of the transport holiday are Novaliches and Cubao in Quezon City, Monumento area in Caloocan Cith, Alabang in Muntinlupa City, and Anda Circle in Manila City.

San Mateo said they are holding the transport strike to protest the government's public utility vehicle modernization program, which kicked off in January this year with the phaseout of old passenger jeepneys.

He said the "anti-poor" program will affect thousands of jeepney drivers and operators nationwide. —Anna Felicia Bajo/ALG, GMA News
