Villar says Imee Marcos, Pia Cayetano to run for Senate in 2019

Senator Cynthia Villar confirmed on Friday that Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and Taguig Representative Pia Cayetano will be seeking Senate post in the 2019 midterm elections.

"Kami sa Nacionalista Party tatlo lang kami [na kakandidato]. Pia Cayetano, Imee Marcos, and myself," Villar told reporters, adding Marcos, daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, has already started going around the country.

Imee had earlier admitted that she has been visiting provinces to find out if a 2019 Senate run is necessary even as she claimed that her family has yet to decide with finality on her possible candidacy.

Villar said she believes Imee's brother, former Senator Bongbong Marcos, will not be running for Senate as he will focus on his pending electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo.

"Parang hindi [siya tatakbo]. I mean, I never say never, October is still far, but so far 'yun ang usapan," she said, referring to the filing of certificate of candidacy for next year's elections.

Villar, wife of former Senate President Manny Villar, the NP chairperson, expressed confidence Imee Marcos will win in the polls.

"Malaki ang chance, of course. Kaya lang naman nawawala sa survey kapag sinasama si Bongbong kasi dalawa sila. Siyempre magulo 'yun, ibig sabihin dalawa 'yung kandidato hindi nila alam kung sino ang iboboto si Imee or si Bongbong. Pero pag siya mag-isa nanalo siya," she said. —KBK, GMA News
