Transport council on alert for vehicles transporting ‘flying’ voters

The Inter-agency Council for Traffic (IACT) on Sunday said it will go after flying voters during the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Monday by intensifying its operations against colorum and out-of-line vehicles.

“It is high time for out-of-line and colorum vehicles to stop being used for ‘hakot’ voters to ensure honest, orderly and peaceful elections,” IACT head Tim Orbos said in a statement on Sunday.

Orbos said the operation against flying voters will be implemented along with Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade's directive to ensure safe travel for voters who will travel to the provinces and polling precincts on election day.

Aside from Metro Manila, IACT covers the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan and Rizal.

Its members include the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Land Transportation Office.

Orbos said drivers and operators of colorum and out-of-line vehicles will also faces charges for violation of the Omnibus Election Code if they are caught transporting flying voters.

He said even candidates who have paid for the transportation of voters will be charged. —ALG, GMA News
