Duterte to push Sara to run for president in 2022, says Trillanes

President Rodrigo Duterte's last resort to hold on to power is to nudge his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, to run for president in 2022, staunch critic Senator Antonio Trillanes IV claimed Tuesday.

Citing "information and analysis," Trillanes said that if Duterte's other options for perpetuating power—declaring nationwide martial law or a revolutionary government and Charter change—fall through, the president's recourse would be to push his daughter to attempt to replace him.

"'Pag di natuloy 'yan, wala na siyang magagawa [kundi] option C niya ay itutulak niya si Sara Duterte bilang pangulo sa 2022, pero ang unang hakbang niyan ay itulak siya para senador sa 2019," Trillanes said at the general assembly of opposition coalition Tindig Pilipinas.

Duterte was previously quoted in a newspaper report as saying he couldn’t find a better successor other than his own daughter, a remark his former spokesperson, Ernesto Abella, downplayed as an expression of trust.

The results of a Pulse Asia survey conducted in March show that the Davao City mayor was among the popular senatorial bets for the 2019 midterm polls.
