Bayan leader to take legal action vs. sales agent over Facebook post

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) secretary general Renato Reyes on Wednesday said he will be suing a certain sales representative for supposedly spreading fake news about him and the United People's SONA.

"We will file a case vs. Gabriel Ilano," Reyes told GMA News Online.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Ilano posted a photo of Reyes with the caption, "Real talk muna tayo... etong p— inang 'to, galit sa kurap pero wag ka, client ko 'to sa Gilmore, halagang P15K na projector, gustong ipa-mark up sakin ng P30K."

Reyes has denied the allegation.

"I decry the orchestrated online slander campaign instigated by Duterte-Marcos trolls against me and the broad United People's SONA. Several accounts posted false and slanderous accounts about me concerning alleged purchases that I never made," Reyes said.

He added that the company the sales agent worked for informed him that Ilano is no longer with the firm.

However, Reyes said that due to Ilano's post, he has received online death threats, including one that read: "Nagmamalinis kang animal ka! Kawatan ka pa rin palang hinayupak ka! Dapat bala ibaon sa ulo mo."

In a follow-up post, Reyes said that he had talked to wife of the person who made the threat, and that she told him her husband has depression, "hence the online death threats."

"She promised to deactivate the account of her husband. I advised her to seek help so that her husband will not hurt anyone," Reyes said.

The activist leader said he will no longer sue the man and another individual who already apologized to him.

"Two others have apologized to me directly, including one who made the online threats and is suffering from depression. I do not wish to file any case against him after his wife explained his situation," Reyes said.

Reyes and his group were among the thousands who marched to Commonwealth Avenue on Monday to deliver the "United People's SONA" on the day of President Rodrigo Duterte's State of the Nation Address, in protest of the administration's policies. — BM, GMA News
