PHL, China postpone Wang visit, talks on joint exploration

The Philippines and China have agreed to reschedule the official visit of Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi from September 16 to 18 to a later date due to the effects of Typhoon Ompong, the Department of Foreign Affairs announced Saturday.

"At this time, the DFA is focused on coordinating offers of international humanitarian assistance through the Philippine Humanitarian Assistance Registry (PHAR) and in extending assistance to OFWs stranded in ports around the country," the DFA said in a statement.

The DFA stressed that both countries ensured continued cooperation to secure the success of "all future high-level engagements and the sustained advancement of our bilateral cooperation."

Yi was scheduled to speak with the DFA to formalize a framework agreement between the Philippines and China on their joint energy exploration agreement.

Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano has said that he met with Yi previously to discuss China's aggressive behavior in the West Philippine Sea at the behest of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte warned China that he will deploy men to attach China in the disputed sea should Beijing renege on its claim that it will cooperate with the Philippines to explore the region for resources. -Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
