Not all students can study Korean language —DepEd exec

Not all Filipino public school students who want to study the Korean language will be allowed to take the course, a Department of Education (DepEd) official said Friday.

In an interview on Unang Balita, DepEd Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said only Grade 7 to 12 students with "mastery" of the English and Filipino languages will be allowed to study Korean.

"By the way ang mga kukunin lang natin na mga estudyante pala ay yung meron ng mastery ng English at Filipino. Hindi tayo kukuha ng mga estudyante na basta-basta lamang merong interes o gusto," she said.

"Idi-develop natin yung skills nila sa listening, reading, writing at speaking of course. Yung kasi ang competence na kailangan ng isang bata para magkaroon ng second foreign language competency," she added.

Ten public schools in Metro Manila have been allowed to teach the Korean language this semester.

The teaching of Korean language is a result of a memorandum of understanding between the DepEd and the Korean Embassy in the Philippines.

Sevilla said the Korean language will be an elective subject just like any other foreign language.

"Ang foreign language ay isang program na nagsimula noong school year 2009, so meron na tayong existing language na tinuturo like Spanish, French, Nihonggo, German at Mandarin. Pang-anim itong Korean," she said.

Sevilla said the Korean language will be taught by teachers trained under the Korean Cultural Center. —KBK, GMA News
